Cadenza
Poetry
A portrait of the artist as my father in phrases I found on his marked-up conducting scores after he passed away.
Read all words with gently moving serenity lightly, nimbly, leggiero anything but static the constant rhythm of two against three motion, life, breath
expression which you have rarely been asked to create before
a little gentle pressure less vertical more curve an ever-expanding contour quasi-erotic urgent, utter no weight no space between but much space above the simplest necessary fulfillment
a monologue a confession a remembrance a lamentation of the beloved a divination a grand gesture an admonition to be happy a ritual of satisfying proportion an internal sense of order a homophonic collective a brief stirring a small unit of refinement an incomparable delicacy a micro-macrocosm a beguine begun a restless activity a wildness a readiness for the surge a trampoline a hastening a sublime swell a swarm a splendor a powerful propulsion a glare a glow a grape fizz a shower of joy
a line, a destiny a stillness that is almost paradise.
Color must always be searched.
It’s a rehearsal—so is life. It’s a job of work maximum diligence infinite materials infinite love dire need potential and dream, not limit no age, no style in the lead.
This is not an unchanging museum.
Perfection must die. Endings are in the design. Listen to the decay. Joy is always subdominant yellow in blue dissonance.
Easy now. The curtain is almost up. Stay calm, enjoy the panic. Drink, sneeze, yawn, scratch. Take a deep abdominal breath. Sopranos, preface your entrance by skipping.
This is the moment! Raise your eyes and behold. Sing. Tell. Paint. Disclose. Question. Diversify. Engage someone. Encourage with your eyes. Unite with Highest Delight.
Don’t rush the cadence. Don’t force the crescendo. Don’t ever close your vowels too early. Don’t forget the fresh awe of the first note.
